India-based Kriti Gupta is today’s #WeLeadComms honoree.
Over the last decade, Kriti has observed that the field of communications is often overlooked during key operational decisions in any organisation. Minimum budget is allocated to communication campaigns because communications is seen as a support function rather than a front-line one. Kriti strives to change this outlook with over a decade of on-ground experience in press and crisis communications combined with her academic knowledge.
She is consistently building towards a future where people recognise that communications is strategic in nature and has the power to make or break a company’s reputation. It has a business purpose with a commercial value attached to it. Every time a company comprises on its goodwill or reputation, it loses its share value, donors disappear, business investments take a hit and then the company wonders how to win back stakeholders’ trust.
Over the last decade, Kriti has specialised in strategic and crisis communications in Asian and UK markets in the public sector. After making a humble beginning as a news producer at the Reuters Express and India’s national English daily newspaper The Times of India, she moved to the other side of the table as a communications professional. She has developed marketing and communications campaigns for both governmental and non-governmental organizations such as the British High Commission in India and Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders. She also has experience in capacity building of communications functions during cost-of-living crisis through her experience at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In her current role, she leads communications for Asia-Pacific at the Rainforest Alliance, creating a bridge between global and the most culturally diverse region in the world-finding the best way to tell stories of climate resilience that work for our people and planet.
During a time where all professions are constantly adapting to the challenges and opportunities of AI, Kriti believes that AI can showcase the strategic ability of communications professionals- a rare skillset combining creativity and humanity which is unique to every individual. This will help communications grab a seat at the leadership level to tackle misinformation, disinformation, reputational risk and give strategic advice in a way that no AI software can replicate.
Kriti completed her master’s in strategic communications at The London School of Economics and Political Science. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, UK.
