The Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) has launched a new initiative to sustain standards and trust in internal communication in the age of AI – its AI Ethics Charter.
Developed in collaboration with IoIC’s most experienced members, the Charter sets out eight core principles for the ethical adoption of AI.
These principles serve as a commitment to ensuring AI is used in a way that is inclusive, safe, legal, and beneficial for all. They align with the IoIC’s existing professional principles and ethical practice guidelines, reinforcing the need for internal communication to remain truthful, fair, inclusive, and respectful in an AI-driven world.
“AI presents an incredible opportunity for internal communication, accelerating knowledge flow and allowing professionals to focus on more human-centred work,” said Jennifer Sproul, Chief Executive at IoIC. “However, ethical AI adoption depends on trust, governance, and critical thinking—areas where internal communicators play a vital role.”
As the only function to connect all parts of a business, internal communication is uniquely positioned to lead the conversation on responsible AI adoption in workplaces. The IoIC AI ethics Charter provides guidance on how organizations can integrate AI while maintaining transparency, integrity, and inclusivity.
“The role of internal communication has never been more important,” added Sproul. “By shaping the ethical use of AI in the workplace, our profession ensures AI supports—not replaces—human connection and trust.”
