by Jen Armel:
Working in corporate communications can feel like a never-ending cycle of deadlines, content creation, leadership updates, and events. It’s a fast-paced, high-expectation role that demands agility and creativity—often at the expense of our well-being. I’ve learned firsthand how easy it is to let self-care slip when you’re constantly focused on engaging and informing others. But I’ve also learned that taking care of myself isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential.
With my husband being a naturopathic doctor, wellness is a frequent topic of conversation in our home. He reminds me that if I don’t take care of my body and mind, I can’t perform at my best. Over the years in the workforce, I’ve developed small, sustainable and impactful habits that help me maintain balance, even in the busiest seasons.
Get Outside, daily!
No matter how packed my schedule is, I make it a point to step outside, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. Fresh air and movement clear my mind, give me a much-needed screen break, and boost my energy.
Stay Hydrated
It sounds basic, but when we’re juggling meetings and deadlines, it’s easy to forget. Keeping a water bottle at my desk is a simple way to remind myself to stay hydrated and keep sluggishness at bay.
Set Boundaries with Technology
In corporate communications, we’re constantly connected—monitoring emails, Microsoft Teams, drafting announcements, and managing internal platforms. But being “always on” is unsustainable. I’ve learned to set boundaries, like turning off notifications at a certain time each day and limiting late-night screen time. And, believe it or not, I even have a no phones in bed rule!
Prioritize Rest
Sleep deprivation doesn’t make us more productive; it makes us more prone to mistakes and stress. I protect my sleep routine (even with a 21-month old), aiming for at least seven hours a night so I can show up as my best self.
Practice Mindful Breathing
When stress builds, a few deep breaths can work wonders. A simple breathwork exercise, even for a minute, helps me stay grounded and refocus. My go-to app for guided meditations: Calm.
A Gentle Reminder
As corporate communicators, we often champion employee well-being through our messaging. But we must also embody it. Prioritizing wellness doesn’t mean overhauling your routine overnight—it’s about small, intentional shifts that help you sustain your energy and passion for the work you do.
Why Wellness Matters for Communications Professionals?
We thrive in a space that requires clarity of thought, emotional intelligence, and stamina. When we neglect our well-being, we risk burnout, decision fatigue, and creative blocks—none of which serve us or our teams. Wellness isn’t just about avoiding exhaustion; it’s about optimizing our energy and focus so we can do our jobs well while also enjoying life outside of work.
