Canada-based communication strategist Rebeca Peon Iñiguez is today’s #WeLeadComms honoree.
In her words:
“Communication has shaped the way I relate to the world. My professional journey began in visual communication, creating training materials and exploring how design has an impact on how people process information and connect with it. Early on, I realized that effective communication goes far beyond visuals. That curiosity led me to explore storytelling, strategy, and the role communication plays in shaping culture and driving transformation within organizations.
“But my relationship with communication started long before my professional career. When I was 1 year old, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and growing up with a condition that requires constant attention taught me lessons that still guide the way I work today. It taught me to listen, observe, plan ahead, and, above all, to develop empathy for other people’s experiences. I learned that every situation has context worth understanding, and that the best solutions often emerge when we approach people and projects with curiosity and humility, rather than assumptions or a know-it-all mindset.
“Throughout my career, I’ve worked alongside diverse, international teams, built communication strategies from the ground up, helped shape organizational voices, and rethought how companies connect with their people. Across projects, I have always been motivated by the same goal: making information clearer, more accessible, and more human. I believe communication has the greatest impact when it’s collaborative, fostering understanding, alignment, and trust.
“One of the most meaningful influences on my professional growth has been my exposure to organizational development and change management. Time and time again, I have seen that resistance to change is rarely about unwillingness. It often comes from uncertainty, lack of context, or feeling excluded from the conversation. That is why I am especially drawn to the intersection of communication, DEIB, culture, and organizational change. It is where strategy becomes experience, and where meaningful communication builds trust, engagement, and a sense of belonging.
“I am deeply grateful to the organizations, teams, and leaders who’ve influenced my career path, especially those who’ve recognized the importance and potential reach of internal communications. Looking ahead, I hope to keep building bridges between people, strengthening organizational cultures, and contributing to purpose-driven organizations that create a positive impact on the planet and people’s lives, particularly in health, wellbeing, and social impact.”
