#WeLeadComms: Joyita Mukherjee

Today’s the #WeLeadComms spotlight lands on Texas-based Indian communication leader Joyita Mukherjee.

She shares her story here:

“I’ve always believed that good communication about helping people understand what matters and why they should care.

“Over the last 15 years, I’ve worked across internal, executive, brand and marketing communications with organizations including PwC, Accenture and EY, in India. I’ve helped leaders communicate through periods of growth, supported brand launches and built communications that connect business strategy with the people expected to bring it to life.

‘Today, I’m based in Texas, where I also work as an independent communications consultant, partnering with individuals and organizations on brand strategy, marketing communications and executive positioning. I enjoy the variety. One day, I might be helping a founder sharpen their narrative, and the next, working with a leadership coach to build a content strategy that reflects who they really are.

“What keeps me excited in this profession is how quickly it’s evolving. Technology, AI specifically, is transforming the way we create content and how our audiences prefer receiving it. But I don’t think it replaces what communicators do best. If anything, it makes our curiosity and ability to understand people even more valuable.

“Something I’ve learned over the years is that communication rarely breaks down because people aren’t talking. It breaks down because we assume sending a message is the same as creating understanding.

“That’s the challenge I enjoy solving, whether I’m working with a leadership team, an organization or an individual building their personal brand. And in line with that, I am also creating a framework (I am calling it LORE) aimed at making startups understand the importance of organizational narrative building from an early stage, so that they can build an impactful and consistent culture across the organization.

“Earlier this year, I moved from India to the U.S. to start a new chapter, both personally and professionally. Starting over has reminded me how much context shapes communication. The same words can mean very different things depending on the audience, culture and moment. It’s made me a better communicator and a better listener.

“Outside work, I recently completed my yoga teacher certification out of a genuine interest in the practice and what it teaches about awareness, focus and intentionality. It’s surprisingly relevant to communications. Both are, in their own way, about paying attention, understanding people and responding thoughtfully rather than reacting instinctively.

“I’m excited to be part of the IABC community, learn from communicators around the world and contribute to conversations about where our profession goes next. “
