#WeLeadComms: Iwin D’Mello

“Communication is not about making noise. It is about knowing what to say, how to say it, whom it will touch, and how it can impact for the desired effect.”

Today’s #WeLeadComms spotlight features Iwin D’Mello, a communications professional based in Bengaluru, India.

She shares her professional journey below:

“I have aspired to work in this field since I first understood its impact. The idea that words can change perception, influence opinion, and shape a brand’s future inspired my career path. I pursued this goal by earning an MS in Communication from the Manipal Institute of Communication and have dedicated the past twenty years to this profession.”

“My early career was shaped by agency experience and managers who practiced tough love. They taught me to think from the brand’s perspective, exceed expectations, and lead teams with empathy while maintaining high standards. This discipline remains the foundation of my work.”

“The roles that challenged me most were those outside my comfort zone. At Bert Labs, an AI-IoT startup, I built the communications function from the ground up and secured international and regional media placements in a year by listening closely and connecting with the right journalists. At Alstom India, I saw how communication unites people during change. At Hitachi Vantara, leading communications across APAC markets, I learned to keep messaging personal at scale. Working on the Lok Sabha election campaign with Rajeev Gowda taught me the significance and responsibility of democratic communication. At Innovation Guild, collaborating with smallholder farmers in remote villages, I discovered that the most effective communication is rooted in truth.”

“An opportunity with Get Set Learn took that understanding further – connecting me with industry veterans and educators to understand what skills the world will actually need and how communication has a bigger role in policy.

“My recent studies at the National Law School of India University and the Indian School of Business provided new perspectives in policy and strategy, making me a more effective and conscious communicator.

“Today, I work with Excelfore, a US automotive software company, helping to share the story of connected vehicle technology in India.

When a brand is ready to grow, a skilled communicator knows how to support its ascent. That is my purpose.”
