#WeLeadComms: Helena Isabel Santos

Portugal-based communication leader Helena Isabel Santos is today’s #WeLeadComms honoree.

“I’ve always been a bridge.”

“Long before communications became my profession, it was simply who I was.

“At university, some friends jokingly called me “the bridge” because I always said that my role was connecting people, helping different groups understand each other, and bringing ideas together. At the time, it was just a nickname. Looking back, it perfectly described the career I would eventually build.

“Like many communicators, I didn’t set out to work in internal communications. My first ambition was to become a sports journalist. I was fascinated by stories, by the people behind the headlines, and by the power of words to make others see the world differently. Life, however, had other plans.

“Joining Fujitsu more than seventeen years ago opened the door to a career I hadn’t imagined. Beginning in customer service and progressing through operations, marketing, global delivery, and internal communications, I discovered that the thread connecting every role wasn’t technology or process. It was people. Every opportunity reinforced the same belief: organizations perform at their best when strategy is translated into meaning, and when people understand not only what is changing, but why.

“Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of leading multicultural teams, building global communications capabilities, and partnering with senior leaders to navigate transformation. Whether creating communication strategies, establishing new ways of working, or supporting global business initiatives, my role has always been to turn complexity into clarity and connect leadership with the people who make strategy happen.

“Another defining influence has been Lean thinking. For more than eight years as a Lean Lead and Champion, I’ve learned that continuous improvement isn’t just about processes – it is fundamentally about communication. The best systems, like the best messages, remove friction, create understanding, and empower people to do their best work. That mindset continues to shape how I lead today: with curiosity, simplicity, and a relentless focus on creating value for people.

“Today, as Internal Communications Manager at HBK, I continue to help organizations strengthen culture, build trust, and create alignment across global teams. Alongside my professional role, I serve on the board of Para Onde?, a non-governmental organization that connects people with meaningful volunteering opportunities. I think this is a natural extension of my belief that leadership is ultimately about building stronger communities.

“Looking back, the path from aspiring sports journalist to global communications leader feels less like a change of direction than a natural evolution. I’ve always been drawn to stories, to understanding people, and to helping others see the bigger picture.

“The title has changed over the years, but the purpose has remained the same.

“I build bridges between strategy and people, helping organizations turn communication into connection, alignment, and action.”
