Today, the #WeLeadComms spotlight shines on Mexico-based communication leader and author Monica Mayorquin.
Mónica has spent nearly two decades inside some of the world’s most complex organizations — Nokia, GE, HSBC, Alshaya, Aptiv — working across the Americas and EMEA, and living and working in Finland and Kuwait. She has advised C-suite leaders, built internal communications functions from the ground up, and led communications through mergers, cultural transformations, and large-scale organizational change.
Her core belief is simple but radical: internal communication is the nervous system of an organization. When it works well, leadership’s intentions become operational reality. When it fails, the symptoms show up everywhere — disengagement, silos, distrust, resistance to change — and most organizations treat those symptoms without ever diagnosing the root cause.
That conviction shaped the work she did inside multinationals for nearly 20 years. And it’s what drove her to go independent.
Today, Mónica runs her own strategic advisory practice, helping executive teams diagnose and regenerate the internal communication health of their organizations. She works at the intersection of leadership behavior, organizational culture, and strategic communication — turning internal communications functions from tactical order-takers into genuine strategic partners.
She is also a writer. Her first book, Angelic Gratitude Journal — 185 days of reflective and loving messages, and her second book, Internal Communication: The Nervous System of Your Organization— launch in October 2026. In her second book she brings her methodology to a broader audience for the first time.
What sets Mónica apart is not just experience — it’s perspective. Having worked across cultures, industries, and continents, she understands that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to communication. Trust is built differently in Finland than in Kuwait. Silence means something different in a manufacturing plant than in a boardroom. The job of a strategic communicator is to understand that — and to build systems designed around those differences, not despite them.
Her ambition going forward is to make that perspective accessible: through her consulting work and her writing to help the next generation of internal communicators think and operate at a strategic level.
She is not interested in internal communication for communication’s sake. She is interested in what changes when an organization’s nervous system actually works.
