#WeLeadComms: Melanie Hillier

Canada-based communication leader Melanie Hillier is today’s #WeLeadComms honoree.

Melanie is a communications and marketing expert with 15+ years experience helping brands find their voice and use it well. She specialises in brand strategy, social media, digital marketing, and content, with a track record of turning complex ideas into clear, compelling stories that connect with real people.

Having lived and worked in three countries, including nearly a decade in Aotearoa New Zealand, Melanie brings an international perspective and a genuine curiosity about people to everything she does.

She has built her career across a range of industries and projects, from developing brand voices and leading government social strategy to writing advocacy campaigns, managing digital channels, and advising on communications planning. Whether working with a large organisation or a small team, she brings the same energy: clear thinking, strong instincts, and writing that actually sounds like a human wrote it.

Beyond her professional work, Melanie is the creator of Dulcet Devotion, a food and baking blog where she shares recipes, food photography, and her deep appreciation for food and culture. It is a natural extension of who she is: someone who cares about craft, creativity, and the details that make an experience memorable.

Looking ahead, Melanie would love to see communications recognised as a true strategic function within an organisation, not just a team to bring in at the end of a project to tick a box. She believes this will not only improve business success exponentially, but help communications professionals get the recognition and support they deserve.
