#WeLeadComms: Ceri Gautama

UK-based communication leader Ceri Gautama is today’s #WeLeadComms honoree.

Ceri is an independent communications consultant specialising in purpose-driven, strategic global communications.

With more than 15 years’ experience leading media and communications for mission-led organisations, including working with War Child, UNICEF, WWF, WaterAid and Alzheimer’s Society, she helps organisations clarify their voice, reach key audiences and deliver campaigns and comms that engage, influence and inspire action.

Her work as a consultant spans narrative and positioning, media relations & PR, strategic communications, crisis and reputational risk management and campaign leadership.

Ceri takes a pragmatic, creative and audience-first approach, grounded in strategic clarity and strong leadership. She has a deep understanding of the global news and political agenda and how organisations can show up meaningfully within it, especially at a time when organisations are communicating in increasingly volatile contexts.

Over the course of her career she has led communications on major global issues including climate change, poverty and inequality, child rights, humanitarian crises and global health. This has included advocacy communications and media for multiple COP, G7 and UNGA summits, emergency response comms for crises including Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine and Afghanistan and driving a major global health campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has worked on high-profile storytelling and cultural moments, including a landmark environmental documentary series fronted by Sir David Attenborough on the BBC. More recently she helped lead communications for WaterAid’s global Team Water campaign, a major collaboration with digital creators including MrBeast, to bring new digital first audiences into the clean water movement, and for the Climate and Water Reception hosted at Buckingham Palace with HM The King. She has also worked on comms for major cultural events and moments including, Glastonbury, Wimbledon, British Art Fair, the BRIT awards and Chelsea Flower Show, and on three major organisational rebrands and brand refreshes.

As a Consultant, Ceri now works closely with communications teams and senior leaders to strengthen communications strategy, sharpen messaging and build the structures, processes, resource and capabilities needed to deliver impactful communications and media relations. She also works with organisations on media and campaign delivery, including high profile launches and events, as well as offering writing and editing support.

At heart, she believes communications holds huge potential in ensuring organisations connect with people in a way that is honest, human and capable of driving real change.

Ceri says: “Good communications means making complex issues feel human and, crucially, impossible to ignore. In a crisis-driven world where audiences are bombarded with messages around the clock and issues fatigue is real, organisations can’t rely on soapbox communications anymore. They have to meet people where they are and find more creative ways to connect.”

Ceri’s work has always been driven by a deep personal commitment to social justice, equality and human rights. She is particularly passionate about diversity, equity and inclusion and ensuring representation within the stories organisations tell and the voices that are heard. Outside of work, Ceri lives in London and loves yoga, meditation, travelling and the pursuit of good coffee.
