Dubai-based communication leader Carmen van Wyk is today’s #WeLeadComms honoree.

In her words:

“I am a communications leader who believes that influence only matters when it is exercised with agency, and that communication earns its value when it contributes directly to business outcomes.

“Throughout my career, I have worked at the intersection of strategy, people, and performance. My contribution has never been about volume or visibility; it has been about clarity. I partner with leaders to translate complex priorities into narratives that people understand, trust, and act on. When communication is intentional, it reduces friction, accelerates decision-making, and strengthens execution. That is its commercial power.

“I approach communications as a business discipline, not a service function. Having agency means making deliberate choices, what to prioritise, when to challenge, and how to shape messages so they create alignment rather than noise. Influence follows when those choices are grounded in credibility, insight, and accountability. I measure success by outcomes: how quickly strategy lands, how confidently leaders lead, and how effectively teams move in the same direction.

“My work has focused on building trust at scale, through leadership platforms, culture-shaping initiatives, and moments that matter. I take responsibility for the impact communication creates, understanding that every message carries consequence. Influence without intent erodes belief; influence with agency builds momentum.

“My ambition is to continue elevating communications as a commercial partner and strategic lever. I am driven to work with organisations and leaders who value clarity over complexity and purpose over performance theatre. I want to build environments where communication enables growth, strengthens reputation, and helps people perform at their best.

“In a world crowded with voices, my contribution is simple and deliberate: to act with agency, to influence with integrity, and to ensure communication moves people, and businesses-forward.”
