LinkedIn: The Most Overlooked Channel in Comms Strategy? 5 Reasons to Pay Attention

Clémence Geay:

As Comms professionals, getting a full view of brand reputation is critical to assess perception, benchmark performance, anticipate crises, and ultimately understand the impact of our work. Most of us already have a decent level of visibility over traditional media and mainstream social channels, they’re built into the stack. But one platform is still too often left out: LinkedIn

While LinkedIn may have started as a professional networking site, holding on to that perception is a problem. The platform increasingly mirrors the style of other social media channels and has become an official communication channel for organizations and their key spokespeople. For example, you might have noticed how Astronomer recently used LinkedIn posts with visuals, to release multiple official statements addressing the scandal involving its CEO and Head of HR which went viral. LinkedIn is where organizations put a face to their brand, build employer reputations, make crucial B2B decisions, and increasingly shape corporate reputations in real time.

All that said, LinkedIn hasn’t been overlooked just because of strategy; there has also been a technical hurdle. For years, the platform’s limited data access made it difficult for most social listening tools to track anything beyond basic, owned content. As a result, LinkedIn became an untapped opportunity, overtime brushed aside out of habit even as it grew more influential, although some platforms quietly began working behind the scenes to close that gap.

Since 2021, some platforms have begun closing this gap, with Onclusive being among the first to offer comprehensive LinkedIn social intelligence when few others only offer very partial views. Four years on, the bottom line is this: if you are still not monitoring LinkedIn closely, you are missing multiple pieces of the bigger picture needed to understand your brand perception and gather early signals that could help you anticipate a potential crisis. You are missing strategic opportunities.

Here are five reasons why you should reconsider how much of LinkedIn you include in your strategy:

1. Protect & Amplify Leadership Reputation

Executives and employees are increasingly seen as brand ambassadors. Monitoring their presence and the conversations surrounding them is essential for managing reputation, mitigating risk, and identifying moments to lead. One example amongst many others is the Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella who’s been using LinkedIn for major announcements, including the LinkedIn acquisition itself. His consistent, direct communication has helped the company shape complex narratives with authenticity.

2. Gain Market and Competitive Intelligence

LinkedIn provides unparalleled access to insights on competitors and market shifts. Tracking updates from executives, hiring patterns, product launches, and industry commentary helps you anticipate moves and understand emerging trends before they hit mainstream news. This ongoing analysis of the competitive landscape enables you to benchmark your strategies and spot new entrants or disruptive players early. By leveraging LinkedIn’s rich narrative around your sector, you turn social listening into a powerful tool for staying ahead and making informed, agile decisions.

3. Craft Strategic Storytelling & Striking The Right Tone

Striking the right tone on LinkedIn is more nuanced than simply being formal or professional. As a platform where business meets personal voice, successful brands use a tone that consistent with their company culture and resonates with their audience. Monitoring LinkedIn conversations uncovers how your target audience talks about key topics, enabling you to create timely, relevant content that lands authentically. Duolingo’s behind-the-scene product insights and ‘career horoscopes’ show how a playful and engaging voice can break through, humanize the brand, and spark meaningful conversations—all while aligning with professional expectations. By listening closely, your storytelling becomes strategic, ensuring your messages connect and drive impact.

4. Identify Collaboration Opportunities with complementary organisations

LinkedIn social listening helps you spot organizations that naturally align with your brand’s values and goals. By tracking mentions of your brand, shared links, relevant keywords, and hashtags, you can discover which companies are engaging with your content or similar topics. These insights reveal potential partners for joint initiatives—whether co-marketing campaigns, collaborative content, or shared events—allowing you to reach out proactively rather than waiting for traditional introductions.

5. Spot and Engage Industry Influencers

Still thinking influencers are just for skincare or fashion? Think again. The content creator boom has reached Linedking which now emerges as a serious player in the creator economy.  With 59% of B2B buyers saying that they consume creator content on LinkedIn, today’s decision-makers are paying close attention to thought leaders in tech, finance, sustainability, healthcare, and beyond many of whom are building their audience on LinkedIn. A stellar example of this was delivered earlier this year by Notion with their #NotionFaces influencer campaign, involving several key figures on Linkedin including Corporate Natalie, one of the most famous accounts on corporate life satire. Who said we had to be so serious on Linkedin? And who knows, you may find out that the best thought leaders are already within your own employees and executives.

Don’t Let LinkedIn Be the One You Miss

Now ask yourself, would you be benefiting from any of the above? In a world where visibility equals preparedness, LinkedIn can’t be left out of the picture. Whether you’re tracking a reputational issue, identifying a partner, benchmarking your executive voice, or simply trying to understand what’s gaining traction, LinkedIn holds insights you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Make sure it’s part of your strategy.
